The showrunner for The Witcher has revealed details on the Easter Eggs that are scattered across season 2 ahead of the release date, which will ‘reward’ fans who are following the ‘entire universe’.

This week, fans of the Netflix show are going to be reunited with Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia in brand new episodes, as he embarks on a treacherous journey with Princess Ciri (Freya Allan) along for the ride.

The drama is based on the original book series by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, whose works also inspired a video game series and a recently-released anime film called Nightmare of the Wolf.

While speaking to and other press, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who created the live-action programme, disclosed what subtle reference to the previous works viewers should keep their eyes peeled for while watching season two.

The producer, who also created the anime, explained that they worked with CD Projekt Red, the company that developed The Witcher video games, where they spoke ‘about the things that we could begin sharing from our universes’.

‘So for instance, a lot of our costumes from season one, you can choose those costumes in the games. So there are several things from the video games that are coming into our world as well,’ she said.

‘There are several things from the video games that are coming into our world as well. Look for Geralt’s video game medallion hanging around, his sword – there are a lot of little fun moments that we have.’

Lauren explained that while there are fewer book-related Easter Eggs, she wanted to ‘try to follow some scenes exactly or storylines’.

‘My favourite thing to do is find specific dialogue from the English translation of the books and make sure that our characters are saying those. We sometimes switch up when they’re said, but I think they’re such beautiful moments that Sapkowski wrote that we want in there,’ she outlined.

However, that’s not all, because fans of Nightmare of the Wolf might also spot some Easter Eggs lying around, as the creators of the live-action series are ‘rewarding viewers who are on the entire sort of Witcher universe journey’.

‘So if people watched, for instance, our anime Nightmare of the Wolf, I think that there are lots of things in season two that you will recognise from that anime that are sort of woven in,’ she said.

‘If you didn’t watch it, you’ll still understand the story just fine, but I think there are little tidbits and rewards for viewers who are along for the whole ride.’

While attending the London premiere of The Witcher season two earlier this month, Lauren opened up to about a deleted scene from the upcoming episodes that should end up in season three.

She explained that the scene in question concerned sorcerer Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) and mage Stregobor (Lars Mikkelsen), as she wanted to explore the former’s backstory in greater depth.

‘To me, the history of Vilgefortz, who he is in this world – he enters almost as a complete stranger and everyone’s kind of wondering what his history is, where he came from,’ she said.

‘That comes into fruition in a huge way in season three, so that’s a scene that we wanted to hold back.’

The Witcher season 2 premieres on December 17 on Netflix.
