Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has welcomed the possibility of playing alongside compatriot and fellow contract rebel Kylian Mbappe at club level next season.

The two Frenchmen are both set to leave their current clubs in the summer when their contracts expire, with Paris Saint-Germain frontman Mbappe long linked with a move to Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Pogba’s future is rather harder to predict, with PSG, Juventus and Real all linked with a move – though a clear favourite for his signature has yet to emerge.

It is not an impossibility that the two players could end up signing for the same club this summer, and Pogba says he would welcome the opportunity to play alongside Mbappe at both international and club level.

Asked if they could be club teammates next season ahead of the 2022 World Cup, Pogba told Le Figaro: ‘Why not? It’s always good to play with teammates for both the France national team and your club.’

While Pogba has been linked with a move to both Mbappe’s current club, PSG, and his prospective next club, Real Madrid, there are zero suggestions that the two could play together for Pogba’s current employers at Old Trafford.

Mbappe appeared to drop a little hint about his situation at PSG when he met up with Pogba at France’s Clairefontaine training base this week, whispering that he was ‘fed up’ with current events.

PSG imploded at the Bernabeu as they were dumped out of the Champions League by Real, while their players were booed in the subsequent home league match.

Mbappe, who is the club’s top scorer this season, has been absolved of any blame for the club’s issues and continues to perform at an excellent level – netting twice in that last-16 clash against Real – and Pogba is a massive fan of his teammate, though believes he can still get even better.

‘As soon as he arrived for his first call-up [in March 2017] he already had this winning mentality and self-confidence which took him to where he is today,’ Pogba continued.

‘Knowing his character, and the person that he is, I’m not surprised at what I’ve seen from him. He will continue to improve and he has not finished surprising everyone.’
