Call the Midwife Series 11: All the Questions We Have After Tearjerking Christmas Special

Call The Midwife returned with a Christmas special that was heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure – but what can viewers expect from series 11?

Fans of the show won’t have to wait long to find out what happened after Cyril (Zephryn Taitte) and Lucille’s (Leonie Elliott) wedding, which rounded off an eventful 1966 for Nonnatus House.

The feature-length episode also raised some interesting questions about the future of the series and all our favourite characters.

The cast has already teased what might happen in series 11 in a recent Q&A, such as love in store for Trixie (Helen George) at last and potential departures.

Here are all the questions we need answered as the show returns for its 10th anniversary series.

Just what exactly is the huge event which will affect all of Nonnatus House?

Stephen McGann, who plays Dr Turner in the show previously dropped a bombshell about the future of the occupants of Nonnatus House, with things look set to change forever.

Speaking recently to press including Metro.co.uk, McGann said: ‘Well, we’re not gonna tell you any details, except to say that it’s big, it’s brilliant and it is a real challenge.

‘I think for people who watch the show, I think it’s a departure, it’s different, i’s ambitious,’ teased the star, as he tried not to let slip too much detail.

‘It’s one of those things, and everybody in their way, is affected by it – everyone comes into its orbit.’

The only clues we seem to have so far is that this time it won’t be Nonnatus House itself at threat, but the people who inhabit its walls, so it really could be anything.

Will Trixie and Matthew finally realise their feelings for each other?

Trixie has been growing close to Matthew (Olly Rix) as of late, and the Christmas special only solidified their blossoming relationship.

Matthew was heavily supported by Trixie after his wife Fiona died of acute myeloid leukaemia, as he struggled to bond with his baby son.

Actress Helen told Metro.co.uk it would be more of a slow burner, due to the pair’s complicated past.

She said: ‘The nature of the relationship with [Matthew’s late] wife as well, it’s such a sort of deeply emotional situation, that it’s not just are they going to get together or they know, there’s so many obstacles to overcome.

‘And it’s such a tricky… it’s a friendship really, and a support mechanism for it becomes for both before it becomes anything romantic.

‘I think it takes a long time for him to I think it’s one of those things everyone else possibly sees around them before they see themselves,’ she teased.

What new medical and societal changes will we see?

Jenny Agutter shared what themes viewers will see in S11 (Picture: BBC / Nealstreat Productions / S)

The upcoming series will be set in 1967, which comes just before the Abortion Act was passed in the UK in 1968.

It seems like the upcoming series will further incorporate the latest medical developments, as well as changes within society, which it always does so well.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk and other press, Jenny Agutter who plays Sister Julienne, said: ‘There are a lot of different medical issues that arise.

‘There’s abuse again, which we’ve had in the past, but it comes back in a different kind of way.

’The pressures aren’t there so obviously – financially – but they are there in terms of how the maternity home runs, the clinic runs,’ she said, adding that many more women were going to hospital and not giving birth at home.

‘So all of that affects things.’

Will Mother Mildred be here to stay?

Viewers were delighted to see Miriam Margolyes return at last, after the actress took a break from her role in series 10.

The star joined the cast back in 2018, and her character is known and loved for her straight-talking style.

Speaking to The Mirror, Miriam recently addressed whether she’d be coming back for more in the future.

‘I’d love to,’ she told the publication, ‘but It depends if they ask me – we never know from year to year whether we will return.’

We’ve certainly got our fingers crossed.

Who might depart in series 11?

So far, it’s thought all of the cast will return for the upcoming series, which begins in just over a week’s time.

However, it’s already been hinted by Agutter there could in fact be exits in store for some of our beloved characters.

When questioned about whether any characters leave in series 11, Jenny teased: ‘I think people are on the edge and they might [leave], it really does look like it.’

More: Christmas

Might we be in store for more emotional departures in the weeks to come? It looks like we’ll have to wait and see.

Call The Midwife series 11 begins on Sunday, January 2 on BBC One.
